Why does Islam depend on the moon?

Answer:

The lunar Islamic calendar is confirmed in the holy Quran and it is Allah in His infinite Wisdom that commands us to follow this calendar.

In trying to find the wisdom behind this divine command, we can suggest that having a lunar-based calendar gives people around the world the ability to follow dates and keep track of the year because it is very easy to sight the moon and keep track of its phases. A solar based calendar would not be easy to follow in the absence of technology.
