What is the ruling on performing Salat (prayers) out loud?

Question:

What is the ruling on performing Salat (prayers) out loud? I have heard mixed opinions on this.

Answer:

For qira’a (recitation of Surat fatiha and second surah) men should recite aloud in fajr, maghreb, and Isha prayers, and recite quietly in Dhuhr and ‘Asr prayers.

Women should recite all prayers quietly but they can recite the fajr, maghreb, and isha prayers out loud if there is no other reason for them to recite quietly (i.e. if there are no strange men around).

As for other parts of the prayer one has a choice of whether to recite out loud or quietly, but it is recommended to recite Qunut (supplication in 2nd Rakat) out loud.
