Smoking

I am trying to quit weed, do I need to do a ghusl and change my clothes to pray?

Question:

I pray 5 times a day but I have a very bad habit of smoking Hash (weed) & I’m trying to quit. I used to smoke everyday but now it’s once or twice a week. Do I need to make a ghusl & change the clothes after smoking in order to pray?

Answer:

It is very good that you are trying to quit smoking weed. This is extremely important both for your faith and your health. You do not need to perform ghusl or change clothes after smoking weed. However, you cannot pray while you are under the effect of marijuana (i.e. intoxicated or ‘high’).

“O you who believe! Approach not *As-Salat* (the prayer) when you are in an intoxicated state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter…”

This should serve as extra motivation for you to quit this harmful habit.

Can I smoke a shisha pen? It’s similar to argeeleh or the hookah

Question:

Nowadays a new trend is out for this the shisha pen, are we allowed to do this? I have read that it has no tar or tobacco and only lasts for 500 puffs. Please would you kindly enlighten on this.

Answer:

If this smoking device contains any substances which might cloud one’s judgment (e.g. marijuana or hashish) then it is not permissible to use it. Anything that in its big quantity intoxicates, its small amount is also forbidden, whether it is hashish or shisha. So, all intoxicating substances are haraam to deal with them in anyway form or shape, whether one inhales it, chews it, sells it etc.

If it is more akin to smoking cigarettes, then one needs to check the ruling of their Marja’ in relation to smoking cigarettes.
