shahada

A sister wants to convert to Islam, how does she do it and are witnesses required?

Question:

A sister wants to convert to the beautiful religion of Islam, how does she say the shahada to become a Muslim? And are witnesses required or is Allah (swt) sufficient as a witness?

Answer:

It is not necessary for any person to witness her recite the Shahadah. As you said, Allah, the Exalted, is sufficient as a witness. The reason why people usually have witnesses is just to make it publicly known they are a Muslim.

As for the pronunciation of the Shahadatayn, she should try to say it in Arabic as best as she can, however she can also say it in English. Below are the words she need to utter and announce, although the important thing is for her to have faith in these two testimonies:

‘I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah (One Unique God). He begets not nor is He begotten. And I bear witness that Muhammad is the last Messenger of Allah’
