Can I follow the same Marja’ as that of my parents, or do I need to do my own research?

Question:

If my parents do taqleed to a Marja’ can I do taqleed to that same person just because they do, or do I need to do my own research?

Answer:

The way to find a Marja’ to follow is to ask two qualified scholars who testify to that Marja’ being the most knowledgeable. The other way is to follow someone who is very widely accepted as a Marja’ among the Shia community.

Following someone simply because our parents follow them is not a reason in itself, and if we simply do this, we are not meeting our responsibility before God. If you do sufficient research and come to the conclusion that your parents’ Marja’ is the most knowledgeable, then of course you can follow the same person.
